ELSS SIP instalments have separate lock in periods, so not every instalment will necessarily be available for redemption at the end of your selected period.

What Is an ELSS Calculator?

An ELSS Calculator helps you estimate how an Equity Linked Savings Scheme investment could grow over time. You can enter a monthly SIP or a one time investment, choose an assumed annual return and compare your investment amount with its projected future value.

The calculator also provides an indicative Section 80C tax saving estimate and a simplified estimate of long term capital gains tax. Your actual benefit depends on your tax regime, remaining deduction limit, other investments and capital gains.

How Does an ELSS Investment Work?

An Equity Linked Savings Scheme is an equity mutual fund category that qualifies for a tax deduction under Section 80C, subject to applicable conditions. ELSS investments have a statutory lock in period of three years. Because the fund invests in the stock market, its value can rise or fall.

You can invest through a monthly Systematic Investment Plan or make a one time investment. A SIP spreads purchases over time, while a one time investment places the amount into the fund at once. Neither method guarantees a positive return.

How to Use This ELSS Calculator

  1. Choose Monthly SIP or One Time Investment.
  2. Enter your investment amount.
  3. Set an expected annual return and investment period.
  4. Select your income tax regime and marginal tax rate.
  5. Enter other eligible Section 80C investments to estimate the remaining deduction limit.
  6. Enter other equity long term capital gains for a more useful exit tax estimate.
  7. Review the projected value, estimated gains and tax results. Open the yearly growth table to see the projection by year.

How Is the Future Value Calculated?

For a one time investment, the calculator applies compound growth to the amount invested. The projection uses the selected annual return and investment period.

For a monthly SIP, the calculator adds each contribution at the end of the month and applies the equivalent monthly growth rate. It repeats this process for the selected period. This is a mathematical projection and does not represent a forecast of actual market performance.

How Does ELSS Tax Saving Work?

Eligible ELSS investments can qualify for a deduction under Section 80C under the old tax regime. The combined deduction limit for qualifying Section 80C investments is ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year. If other eligible investments have already used part of this limit, only the remaining amount may qualify.

The new tax regime generally does not allow the Section 80C deduction. The calculator therefore displays zero Section 80C tax saving when the new regime is selected. Your actual tax saving may also differ because of your taxable income, rebates, cess and other circumstances.

Understanding Long Term Capital Gains Tax

When eligible equity mutual fund units are sold, capital gains tax may apply. The applicable rate and exemption depend on the law in force, the type of investment and the relevant financial year. The estimate in this calculator uses a simplified 12.5% rate and a ₹1.25 lakh annual exemption assumption, with 4% cess on the calculated tax.

The calculator also considers the other equity gains you enter when estimating the remaining exemption. It estimates the additional tax associated with the projected ELSS gain, not your complete tax liability. Surcharge, special circumstances, changes in law and other adjustments are not calculated. Check the current Income Tax Department guidance or consult a qualified tax professional before making a tax decision.

Important Things to Know Before Investing

  • ELSS returns are market linked and are not guaranteed.
  • The three year lock in applies separately to each SIP instalment.
  • The three year lock in is a minimum period, not a promise that the investment will be profitable after three years.
  • The Section 80C limit is shared with other qualifying investments and payments.
  • Tax treatment can change. Verify the applicable rules for the financial year in which you invest or redeem.
  • Past performance does not guarantee future returns. Consider your risk tolerance and financial goals before investing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is an ELSS Calculator?

Ans. An ELSS Calculator estimates the future value of an ELSS investment using your contribution amount, expected annual return and investment period. It can also provide an indicative estimate of eligible tax savings and capital gains tax.

Q. What is the lock in period for ELSS?

Ans. ELSS has a statutory lock in period of three years. For a SIP, each instalment has its own lock in period based on its investment date.

Q. Can I claim a tax deduction for ELSS under the new tax regime?

Ans. Section 80C deductions are generally not available under the new tax regime. Eligible ELSS investments may qualify for a deduction under the old tax regime, subject to the applicable rules and the combined annual limit.

Q. How much tax can I save by investing in ELSS?

Ans. The potential tax saving depends on the eligible amount, your marginal tax rate and the unused portion of the Section 80C limit. Other qualifying investments can reduce the amount available for an ELSS deduction. The calculator provides an estimate rather than a final tax calculation.

Q. Is a monthly SIP better than a one time ELSS investment?

Ans. It depends on your finances and investment preferences. A SIP spreads contributions across different market levels, while a one time investment puts the amount into the fund at once. Both carry market risk and neither guarantees a profit.

Q. Are ELSS returns guaranteed?

Ans. No. ELSS funds invest primarily in equity and equity related instruments. Their value depends on market performance, and investors can receive less than the amount invested.

Q. How is tax on ELSS gains calculated?

Ans. Tax treatment depends on the applicable capital gains rules and the financial year of redemption. This calculator uses a simplified rate and exemption assumption for planning purposes. Your actual tax may differ because of other gains, surcharge, cess and changes in law.

Q. Can I withdraw my entire ELSS SIP after three years from the first instalment?

Ans. Not necessarily. Each SIP instalment has its own three year lock in period. Earlier instalments may become available for redemption while more recent instalments remain locked in.
