Child Education Plan Calculator: Calculate Future Costs & SIP

Planning for your child’s education starts with estimating future college costs, not just today’s fees. Use this Child Education Plan Calculator to estimate the amount you may need when your child begins a course and the monthly SIP required to work toward that target.

How to Plan for Your Child’s Education Expenses

Higher education can involve tuition fees, accommodation, books, travel and everyday living expenses. The total varies widely between institutions and locations. Start with a realistic estimate for the course your child may pursue, then adjust it for the number of years remaining before admission.

How Much Could a Course Cost in the Future?

The future cost depends on today’s estimated cost, the annual increase you assume and the time remaining. A course that costs ₹10 lakh today would cost about ₹25.94 lakh after 10 years if its cost increased by 10% every year. This is a mathematical projection, not a forecast of any institution’s actual fees.

Formula Used by the Calculator

Future course cost: Today’s course cost × (1 + annual cost increase ÷ 100)years remaining.

Future value of existing savings: Existing savings × (1 + annual return ÷ 12)months remaining.

Monthly SIP: The amount required each month to accumulate the remaining target, assuming monthly compounding and contributions at the end of each month.

The calculator subtracts the projected value of existing savings from the future course cost before estimating the required SIP. If existing savings are already projected to cover the entire target, the estimated SIP is zero.

Why Starting Earlier Can Help

Starting early gives investments more time to potentially grow and spreads contributions across more months. The calculator compares starting now with starting two years later. In the delayed scenario, existing savings continue growing until the original goal date, while monthly SIP contributions begin two years later. The comparison assumes the same return rate in both scenarios.

Choose Assumptions Carefully

Education cost increases differ by course, college and country. Investment returns also vary with market conditions and the investments selected. Try multiple assumptions instead of relying on a single optimistic estimate. Review your target as admission plans and actual fees become clearer.

What About SSY, PPF and Mutual Fund SIPs?

Different savings and investment options have different eligibility rules, risks, liquidity conditions and tax treatment. Sukanya Samriddhi Account is intended for an eligible girl child and has specific withdrawal rules. Mutual fund returns are market-linked, while small-savings scheme interest rates may change. Check the latest official scheme rules before choosing an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a Child Education Plan Calculator?
Ans. It estimates the future cost of your child’s education and the monthly SIP that may be needed to work toward that goal using your assumptions for education cost increases and investment returns.
Q. How is the future cost of education calculated?
Ans. The calculator compounds today’s estimated course cost by the assumed annual education cost increase for the number of years remaining until admission.
Q. Are the course costs shown in the calculator official fees?
Ans. No. They are illustrative estimates for planning. Actual fees depend on the institution, course, admission category, accommodation and other expenses. Use a current estimate for your chosen institution whenever possible.
Q. Does the calculator guarantee the required SIP will be enough?
Ans. No. The result depends on the assumptions entered. Actual investment returns and education costs can differ from projections, so review and adjust your plan periodically.
Q. Does existing savings reduce the monthly SIP required?
Ans. Yes. The calculator estimates how existing savings could grow by the goal date and subtracts that projected value from the future course cost before calculating the SIP.
Q. Is Sukanya Samriddhi Account suitable for every child?
Ans. No. It is a government savings scheme for an eligible girl child and is subject to specific account, deposit and withdrawal rules. Check the latest official terms before relying on it for education expenses.
Q. How often should I update my education plan?
Ans. Review it periodically, for example every one or two years, and whenever your course choice, expected costs, savings or investment assumptions change significantly.
