Calculation assumption: the income replacement amount uses a 2% annual real discount rate, meaning an assumed return above inflation of 2%. This is a modelling assumption, not a guaranteed investment return. The result is an educational estimate, not personalised insurance or investment advice.
What Is Human Life Value?
Human Life Value, commonly called HLV, is a way to estimate the financial contribution a person may provide to their family over time. It can help families think about income, dependents, debts, financial goals and the resources they already have.
HLV and a needs-based life insurance calculation are related, but they are not identical. HLV methods may focus on future earning capacity or financial contribution, while a needs-based calculation estimates the funds a family may require after the loss of an income earner.
How This Term Insurance Calculator Works
This calculator follows a simplified needs-based approach. It estimates the present value of household expenses over the selected support period, adds outstanding liabilities and future goals, and subtracts existing life insurance and available savings.
The estimate cannot account for every family’s circumstances. It does not automatically include taxes, future income growth, investment fees, changes in family spending, other income sources or every possible financial obligation. Review the inputs carefully before using the result for planning.
How Income Replacement Is Calculated
The calculator treats the household expense amount as a constant expense in today’s purchasing power. It then estimates the present value of annual expenses over the selected number of years, using the assumed real discount rate.
Annuity Factor = [1 minus (1 + r) raised to the power of negative n] divided by r, where r is the assumed annual real discount rate and n is the support period in years.
This method assumes expenses are withdrawn at the end of each year for calculation purposes. Actual household expenses occur throughout the year, and actual investment returns can vary. Therefore, the result is an approximation rather than a promise that a specific corpus will last for the entire period.
Needs-Based Method Compared With Other Methods
| Method | How It Works | Main Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Income Multiplier | Uses a multiple of annual income, such as 10 or 15 times income. | Does not directly account for each family’s expenses, debts and assets. |
| Human Life Value | Estimates a person’s future financial contribution or earning capacity using a chosen methodology. | Results depend on income assumptions, time horizon and calculation method. |
| Needs Based | Estimates family expenses, debts and goals, then subtracts available resources. | Depends on the quality of the inputs and the assumptions used. |
No single method is automatically the most accurate for every person. A needs-based estimate can be useful when the inputs reflect the family’s actual financial position. An income multiplier can provide a quick comparison, but it should not replace a detailed review.
How to Choose the Right Amount of Term Insurance
- Estimate the monthly expenses your dependents would need to cover.
- Choose a support period that reflects your family’s circumstances.
- List the outstanding debts your family may need to repay.
- Estimate major future goals, such as education, using a consistent price basis.
- Deduct existing life insurance and only those savings that would genuinely be available for these needs.
- Review the result against your budget, policy eligibility and the terms of available insurance plans.
Why Your Insurance Requirement Can Change
Your family’s insurance needs can change when you take a new loan, have a child, change jobs, experience a significant change in income or build additional savings. Inflation can also increase the future cost of living and financial goals.
Review your estimate after major life changes and periodically as your financial position evolves. If you already have a policy, check its cover amount, exclusions, policy term and the conditions under which a claim may be paid.
Important Things to Remember
- This calculator estimates a potential cover gap. It does not calculate insurance premiums or determine whether an insurer will approve an application.
- Do not count the same insurance policy or financial asset more than once.
- Only subtract savings that your family can reasonably use for the expenses being assessed.
- Use future goal costs and savings consistently. If a goal amount is already projected in future rupees, account for that before entering it.
- Actual insurance needs depend on dependents, other household income, financial goals and personal circumstances.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ans. A Human Life Value calculator estimates the financial contribution or protection amount associated with a person’s life. Different HLV methods use different assumptions. This tool uses a simplified needs-based approach to estimate additional term insurance cover for a family’s financial needs.
Ans. The appropriate amount depends on your family’s expenses, outstanding debts, future goals, existing life insurance, available savings and other sources of income. Entering these details into a needs-based calculator can provide a useful starting estimate, but the result should be reviewed against your actual circumstances.
Ans. Not necessarily. An income multiple is a rough benchmark and may not reflect your outstanding loans, dependents, future expenses or existing assets. Compare it with a needs-based estimate before deciding on a cover amount.
Ans. Existing life insurance may already cover part of the family’s financial requirement. Subtracting the relevant existing cover helps estimate the additional amount that may be needed. Count only cover that is applicable to the family and avoid counting the same policy twice.
Ans. You can subtract savings and investments that your family could reasonably use for the needs included in the calculation. Consider liquidity, market risk and whether particular funds must be reserved for emergencies or other purposes. Do not automatically treat every asset as available cash.
Ans. The rate is an illustrative assumption for estimating the present value of future household expenses after accounting for inflation. It is not a guaranteed investment return. A different assumption will change the estimated income replacement corpus.
Ans. No. Enter future goals in today’s rupees for a consistent estimate. If you enter an amount that already includes projected inflation, do not add inflation to it again. The calculator separately uses a real discount rate for the income replacement calculation.
Ans. No. It estimates a possible cover requirement. Actual policy premiums, eligibility, underwriting decisions, exclusions and terms depend on the insurer and the applicant’s circumstances.
Ans. Review your needs after major financial or family changes, such as a new loan, a child, a change in household income or a major goal. Periodic reviews can also help you check whether your existing protection remains suitable.
